Club EQ Album: December 2003 Challenge: Round Quilts! Page 3

Design a round quilt. You can use motifs and the virtual border technique (delete a border that has a motif covering it) to get a round outline for the quilt without having the square default quilt outline.

Mecklem Tree Skirt 2

dmecklem @ charter.net

I used Wreathmaker to design this tree skirt. I used the triangle shape and edited it to curve both the outer and inner circles. I then used wreathmaker with 6 for the number of clusters. I then individually moved and edited each motif to align with the others and smoother the inner completed circle. I then removed the block outline making it a motif. On the quilt worktable I used a 1 inch horizontal square with a 1 inch border. I set the wreathmaker motif on top of the quilt and deleted the first and only border. I then added motifs from the EQ library and sized and rotated them on the treeskirt. This was great experience with Wreathmaker.

The round challenge was the perfect opportunity to design a hex sign - a Pennsylvania Dutch sign placed on barns to bring good luck to farmers. Done with the wreathmaker function.

Starry Night in December

A motifs from the library is the surrounding "border " of winterflowers. Inside a circle with motifs of a starry night. In december the days from 22. again increase a little every day ,untill the really dark nights are gone in Spring.

I have to admit, I just didn't get how to do the round quilt, and came up with this work around and rather liked it. Mary, on the EQ newsletter, sent instructions that I finally understood on making the round quilt but I still liked the wreath, so here it is.

I found this really difficult and I'm not sure how I got here. I started trying to draw a snow flake but ended up with stars as well - hence the name. JeanJ

Red, White, Blue and Round

Used four #V004 - Yankee Pride quilt blocks from Block Base. 2 horizonital, 2 vertical 10.50 in size. Border was set at 18.25 originally. After setting blocks, and adding outer motif ring as border on layer 2, deleted the border to keep the round circle as border. Border is 8.50 inches. Size of quilt would be 38 inches.

Wow, what a challange for my first EQ block exchange! Thanks to all that answered questions on our list... This 40" circle quilt is far from perfect, but if sewn out could be a table topper.

I first tried tracing a letter O as Barb suggested. I could not get the sides even. Perhaps after I take the Tracing Class at Quilt University, I will try it again. I made this quilt creating it in patch draw as one block and then changing it to a motif.

This quilt could be done with wool and blanket stitch applique so the outside edge is like the penny rugs.

This was a tough challenge for me, and this is the best I came up with yet. Lots of fun, with a lot of side trips along the way. Good thing we're not showing the ones that didn't work!

A lot of the challenge was finding a setting which did not lookawkwardly cut off when the circle was added. I did a lot of playing with various layouts in the layout library.

This should really be called "Hard to Get a Perfect Circle." At some point I realized that the right side was flattened; redid the motif for my second quilt. The "challenge" seemed to be getting the circle right.

I thank Barb for this one. It was a real mind stretcher. I worked with many diffeent blocks trying to draw them for a motif, but just couldn't get a good one, so I took the easy way out and used some of the motif blocks that came with the program.
