Club EQ Album: December 2003 Challenge: Round Quilts! Page 2

Design a round quilt. You can use motifs and the virtual border technique (delete a border that has a motif covering it) to get a round outline for the quilt without having the square default quilt outline.

Seven Stars

I had a great time with this challenge! I sometimes create an applique from a pieced block to get the "look" I want for my calendars. This one is based on the Seven Stars Block which I found in Block Base Libary (#241). The fabrics I used here are mostly batiks.

Snowflake Plate Quilt

Winnipeg, MB Canada

The May/June 2003 (#91) issue of Quiltmaker magazine carried some quilt designs called "Plate Charmers" to use under (or sandwiched between) clear glass plates. I thought a snowflake design would be nice for a winter theme. The design could also be enlarged to make a Tree skirt.

Wreath and Trellis

I drew an open wreath shape for the outer rim's base and used the wreathmaker with the 'Shagbark Hickory' motif from EQ's library. The center block (NOT for sewing in real fabric!) was inspired by the foundation guidelines Patti Anderson used for drawing a Rolling Stone block (chapter 3 of "EQ5 Drawing").

I drew the background myself but used 'Teddy Bear 2' and 'Trumpet' blocks from EQ's applique section for the rest. I made the blocks into motifs, tweaked them a bit, and added a vest and tam. Easy!

Candy Cane Skirt

I never run out of inspiration for tree skirts and table mats, so to make this a challenge I decided to play with wreathmaker. The background block is a Dresden Plate from EQ library. I edited it to display binding trim. Much to my surprise & delight, the candy cane block formed a star when made into a wreath. I couldn't pass this one up. I think I'll have to really sew this one!

To create this round quilt I took four blocks and placed then on layer 2 of a 1 block quilt. When the outlines are turned off you get the round quilt appearing.

circle quilt

This was quite a challenge and I think I may even have 'cheated' a bit here. I did draw the center 'block' in Easy draw and left the corners white, then I drew the outer circular frame in Patch draw and overlaid the 2 units. Only thing is the outer edges of the Easy draw block are still there - although by leaving them white & choosing to print no block outlines & no patch outlines they do not show - so then it appears to be a circular quilt. I will keep working at this to see if I can do it without cheating.....

Ring A Round The Rosie

I used motifs and Wreath.Blocks_#6 Motifs_Simple Design. The Tulip Ring was in #6 Simple Designs Wreaths. The peony was #6 Motifs_ Flower Heads. I really can see myself doing this. I love doing applique in the evening. I can hardly wait to see how the other ladies did their circle. I have a feeling I am way off base. I am working in"EQ5 Drawing" by Patti R. Anderson. I am really ready for this book. The info in this book is just what I needed. Even though the EQ5 Cookbook has just about everything that one would need. Patti's book takes you past what is in EQ5 Cookbook. I keep on saying "oh for goodness sake, is that how you do it." In our home we call that a "Gotchya." This sounds like I work for EQ. I don't, but I do like to share what I think about the books. Even though I have been a EQ user since EQ1 came out it has been an on and off thing. So, hopefully now I can really buckle down. It's so exciting. Happy New Year everyone.

Let There Be Peace On Earth.

I used motifs from EQ5 Block Library. #6 Simple Designs. The Doves in Canada are gray but as far as I know the Peace Dove is white. I tried using White but it looked blah. Then I tried different grays, again blah. This colour looks like a blue gray which was great because at this point in time we have a lot of Doves and they do have a blue tint. I did this quilt in PatchDraw. The block size was 12" Snap to Grid Point _H=96, V=96 I checked off Snap to Grid, Snap to Node, Auto Join, Auto Align Similar Segments Graph paper number of divisions H=12 V=12. I was really trying various things in the Drawing Board Setup just to see what would happen. I have for some reason not used the Drawing Board enough. I guess I was afraid that I would mess up. It sure makes it easier to have the Drawing Board setup. I still haven't got it down but now I understand how important it is to have it setup properly. It is all explained so well in the EQ5 Cookbook, Barb books, and my newest one is EQ5 Drawing by Patti R. Anderson. There is only one problem Patti I can't get back to your book fast enough. I used the Doves because of all of the terrible things going on in the world. The Dover represents Peace and Love. Personally I love watching them because they are a goofy birds and make me laugh. We need to share with all of the laughter and love that we can. My heart and prayers goes out to all of the young men, women and their families. The USA is such a special country. I have found that the women I have met through EQ5 email conversations has shown me why it is such a great country. I have never known women who are willing to share and encourage others like quilters. Canada is kind of great too. Barb thanks again for another wonderful Challenge.

Christmas Table Topper

December 2003 Club EQ Challenge I used two blocks from the Classic EQ5 Block Library, Love in a Mist from the Eight Point Stars category and Coxey's Camp from the Diamond in a Square category. My DH gave me Barbara Vlack's book, EQ5 Quilt Design for Christmas yesterday and I was finally able to master the virtual border feature of the EQ program thanks to her book. It was a fun challenge and the virtual border is one I will try again.

Hexagonal Round Quilt

I used both EQ5 Drawing by Patti Anderson and EQ5 Quilt Design by Barbara Vlack, which I just got for The theme for this challenge was round quilts.I had created this quilt using Patti Anderson's book EQ5 Drawing and Barbara Vlack's book EQ5 Quilt Designs, which I got for Christmas, to complete this quilt. I loved Patti's book, but couldn't get the hang of virtual borders.
My DH gave me Barb's book for Christmas and as soon as I opened it yesterday I said, now I can do the challenge. I know I will use the virtual quilt border again.
Thanks Patti and Barb.
