Club EQ Album: December 2003 Challenge: Round Quilts! Page 1

Design a round quilt. You can use motifs and the virtual border technique (delete a border that has a motif covering it) to get a round outline for the quilt without having the square default quilt outline.

OVER THE TOP

This is my first attempt at a round quilt, and I have learned so much with this exercise.

I edited a applique block for the centre. Then added motifs and embroidery in a very haphazard fashion.

Round and Round

I used Layered motifs in the round quilt with a round "border" integrated into the design. Designed with EQ5's Virtual borders (ie. no traditional borders).

Practised on this first to see if I could do as Barb suggested. Voila! It worked! I'm getting Barb's book for Christmas from my son. website

The Girl in the Brooch

The scallops around the oval are supposed to represent lace. Tried to make a quilt that looks like a brooch. This was fun Barb. Thanks. website

Freedom

This was inspired by my riding. I am in love with a horse that I ride regularly. She is not brown but I loved the batiks. I am actualy making this for the owner of my stable.

Mecklem Tree Skirt

This was a fun challenge. I have loved this feature of EQ5, being able to put a virtual border on a quilt to make it any shape you want it to be. All Applique designs are from the Contemporary Applique - Christmas Library in EQ.

Barbara Gilstad
Ginko Leaves I

I designed this original circular quilt with 5 ginkgo leaves especially for this month's challenge. Using printer guidelines demonstrated by Craig Hamer (Mr. HP) in the EQ Computer Lab at the International Quilt Festival in Houston this year, I made a large poster for my studio. However, before I could even hang it up, my dear sweet husband swiped it and hung it by his computer. So... I guess I'll just have to print another one! But I think I'll change the fabric first. Merry Christmas! Barbara from Texas

Ginko Leaves II

Isn't it amazing how different fabric can have such an impact on such as simple design as this one? I think I'll "audition" a wide variety of fabrics before deciding which one to print as a large poster for my studio. Oh dear, that means the Christmas cookies I had planned to make today will just have to wait until tomorrow because I'm having way too much fun to stop now! Thanks for another "real" challenge, Barb V. You really know how to stretch us! Barbara from Texas

Birds and Butterflies

Simply made with the directions given by Barb Vlack to make the "donut" shape, then placing it on the border. I then just added simple applique shapes that are included in EQ5's library to make the birds and butterflies.

Sun and Moon

I designed this quilt by using Barb's method of creating the "donut" border, then made a one block quilt in which I used a block I'd designed simply by drawing a curved line from corner to corner to create the moon side of his face. The face was created as a motif block using patchdraw, then was placed on layer 2 of the quilt. The sun rays are also motifs I drew in patchdraw, then added on the 2nd layer of the quilt.

Tree Skirt

For several years I've been wanting to make a quilted tree skirt out of some leftover velvet scraps I have. Here's my first stab at designing it. Maybe by next year, it will be a real quilt.
