Club EQ Album: November 2003 Challenge: One-Color Quilts! Page 1

Use only one color/hue to color your quilt! That means you can use shades, tints, and tones of a color, but use only one color. OK, you can use white and/or black and/or gray as a neutral, but those are the only deviations from the target color/hue. Study the EQ5 Color book by Susan McKelvey for information and inspiration on "value."

I really like the tumbling blocks and one of these days I'm going to make one. Tumbling Blocks is really great eye candy and I like the reversed blocks in the center.

Soothing Lone Star

I created a 10 x 10" block grid, selected a blue/green color swatch from the Color Tab, right clicked on the swatch to find the Shades and Tints button, added the resulting grades to the Sketchbook. I proceded to color the block with the colors. I used the Layouts Library, using the Star 1 block and used a trick Barbara Vlack suggested a couple of months ago to color a Lone Star block by placed a grided block in each arm of the star. What a great tip!!

Sparkling Pink

As with the Teal quilt, I created a Shades and Tints palette, added it to my Sketchbook and colored the 10" grid block. I used the basic horizontal layout and set the pink grid into the empty blocks. I achieved the Navaho look by using the rotating button. The blocks in the border are also from the 10" grid block, but I used a different orientation for the colors to create these Points Out design.

Charlotte Kleiner
Pine Tree Junction

This design began with the July Bargello challenge but didn't make it into the entries as I wanted to work on it some more. I started by dividing the square layout into 4 quarters diagonally by using 1/2 square triangles in a line from each of the four corners. Then I started my bargello design in one quarter of the design and repeated it in each of the other three quarters. Once I had my pattern copied in each quarter I was able to replace the 1/2 square triangles going diagonally with solid blocks. The pattern which resulted reminded me of pine trees. So I chose green as my starting colour and used the "add shades and tints" feature to get my colour palette. Then I started filling in the design with the different solid values of green.

This is the same Bargello design as the first quilt but when the darker colours are placed where the light colours were and in a different order the look of the piece changes.

Barbara Gilstad
Tile in Mind I

This month Barbara Vlack invited us to play with the shades, tints, and tones of one color. Whoever would of imagined this challenge could be so much fun! I thought it was going to be boring! Was I ever wrong! :)

Tile in Mind II

This month I found that playing with only one block (Block Library, EQ5 Libraries, 5 Contemporary Applique, Tile and Celtic Designs, Arabesque) and the shades, tints and tones of only one color was more than satisfying. And not surprisingly, I rediscovered that sometimes less is delightfully more.

Illusions of Green

Created by Barbara Rotondi using the Blue Boutineers block re-colored with variations of green. The blocks are set in the quilt using the vertical layout. Some blocks are rotated to provide the pattern -- do you see steps? or stars? or ?

If you've noticed my past challenge entries you'll see I love purple shaded quilts.
This design came about while playing with the Dog Tooth Violet block from BlockCentral.com.

I used the default dark purple (R:102 G:0 B:102), graded it to white, then to black.

Honest, fellas, this is only one color. I chose a clear yellow to expand with 'Tones and Tints' and got this great range of shades. At least it's great if you like yellow!

Stars on the Move

You can have such fun with 'Tones and Tints" and the thread tool!

If I ever sewed this in real life, I think I'd keep it small--as designed, the center square is only 12 inches--and do it in several steps using washaway stabilizer to sew the different colors of thread-play in the center.
