Club EQ Album: July 2003 Challenge: Bargellos! Page 4

"Design a bargello quilt. You may use a design from the Layout Library and experiment with color, or do something completely different. Challenge yourself to create a unique setting for bargello. You may get some inspiration by studying canvaswork (a.k.a. needlepoint) bargello designs."

Bargello 1

This looks better with the outlines turned off. Anyone who downloads the file should be sure to look at it that way.

I used the Bargello layout from the Layout Library and played with putting blocks into the layout. I tried many color combination, and the "glow effect" of some combos was amazing!

Bargello 2

Needless to say, I would *never* tackle making this quilt in real life!

I started with the Bargello layout from the Layout Library, and put pieced blocks into the layout. Coloring them can be tedious, but the results are worth the effort!

After playing with color on the graph that I made up, this was my favorite (for today anyway).

Bargello in the "Round"

An attempt to reproduce the "Bargello in the round" found in a book from the library. It doesn't have quite the same look.

O! Christmas Tree

In Marge Edie's book "A New Slant on Bargello Quilts," she discusses using a 45 degree block in the strips. I'm not sure if this is what she meant, but this design reminded me of a Christmas tree, so I colored it that way.

Scape

This is my first challenge, really my first EQ project so it seems pretty basic compared to what I have seen others create. It is a start and I am excited about creating more.

Love Garden

This is the first quilt I have designed in EQ. I may not have done it the best or most efficient way, but what fabulous fun ! I had wanted to add quilted or applique hearts and/or vines in the sashing rows and border but haven't had time to learn how to do that yet.

Hearts As Flowers

Variation on the theme of the first quilt- this one adds a bargello background pattern as counter-point to the bargello heart shaped flowers

Bargello Trees

Many years ago, I stitched this bargello design in Persian yarn for the top of a rectangular stool that sits beside our bed. We live in the woods and the design reminds me of trees. This design can be done in strips of pieced squares, but I got tired of coloring all those little squares, so I redesigned it in blocks. When I use an unpieced border, I quite often insert a skinny three dimensional flap between the pieced section and the border as an accent.
