Fan Bouquet VII

I am having fun playing with the layouts in EQ5.
The Star-13 has given me a few interesting designs. I have spent a lot of time spinning the blocks to get different effects.

Afternoon Wedding Quarter Block

I initially drafted this as a whole block but found more interesting design possibilities with it as a quarter block, so I'm submitting it instead. This is loosely based on the Wedding Ring block.

Curves in Motion

I want to design a quilt with no
traditional block. I desired to try to make
some curves in motions.

Charlotte Kleiner
Moorish Lace Tablecover

I saw a picture of a piece of lace in the July 2003 issue of "Threads" Magazine. I liked the way the solid and the lacy bands wove in and out of each other, so I made my version of this piece in PatchDraw.
I started with a motif from the EQ library - Moorish Design ( #6-Motifs - Simple Designs) for my basic shape. I also designed the border and corner blocks using this basic shape.

Old Maid's Puzzle

I thought for a long time what to do for this challenge, and I realized how hard it was to come out with something original that I haven't seen before. It wasn't until I saw an episode of Simple Quilt where the guest took an old block and draw curves around the lines, that it occured to me to do the same. So, I took the old maid's puzzle block and try drawing curves and putting in a quilt to see the different patterns that I could get. It work, and I like the three arragement that got from it.

Intertwined Ribbons

I used the Lemoyne Star Variation and turned most of the lines to curves. It looks like twisted ribbons.

Wave block into daisies!

The challenge deadline was only a couple of hours away, that's why there are some orphan blocks on the edge of this quilt.
Maybe you can do better??

Christmas Scottie

Bought some Christmas fabric on Ebay and it had a scottie border - couldn't find a scottie pattern anywhere and said thank goodness for EQ once again. Want to know how come I can draw this in EQ and can't do the same freehand.

Whirligigs

This challenge was fun trying to come up with a curved block that could actually be pieced. I'm not sure I would want to piece it even though it is fairly simple.

I designed this simple block and then played with it in different sets. I liked it best in a Horizontal Layout after rotating some of the blocks to form a different looking whirligig.

Curves and Melon Wedges

This was a fun challenge and I enjoyed trying this original block that I drew in
all the different settings styles. In the final analysis I decided I liked the On Point setting best.

Bloomin Hearts

I used the Stars 13 special layout in the EQ Library. Isnt it wonderful how EQ can askew a block! Since I havent progressed to curved piecing, I used this layout for a design for my kitchen done with fabric on foam board. I printed the skewed blocks from EQ, used a glue stick to attach the paper pattern on the board & just tucked the fabric in with a knife by cutting on the pattern lines. I used scraps of batting under each piece for that soft, quilted look. I sized it to 24 x 24. It was very easy, very quick & made a stunning wallhanging. No sewing necessary.

Mary Demers

Wow! What an exercise!! I learned to draw a curve, partition a curve, make sure the nodes were closed, use graph paper and lots more. Again, thanks EQ.

Sheila is right; we participate in these challenges, not so much for the blocks and quilts we receive, but for the knowledge and confidence we gain by challenging ourselves to push our personal boundries.
