Club EQ Album: November 2002 Challenge: Superimpose Blocks! Page 9

"Explore the EQ Block Library and find two blocks that can be superimposed to create an entirely new block. This can be a really fun thing to do and something you might not think to do without the computer to help you! Start by looking at blocks with similar grids. You can explore further by getting bold about what you combine.

The superimposing or overlaying of one block design over another can be done in the Edit mode from the Sketchbook. Save two blocks into the project Sketchbook. Edit one and select all the lines. Copy. Then Paste those lines over another block drawing that you have selected to Edit from the Sketchbook. Carefully center one over the other and look for design elements to highlight with color."

Glass Shoos

Blocks used: Shoo Fly and Broken Dishes I used very simple blocks because I wanted to play with transparency. I created a palette of fabrics in very basic colors that had a colored glass look. All the fabrics are from the EQ5 Designer Palette. The transparent look is even more evident if you remove the black outlines of the quilt. The secondary design of the red Ohio Star was a surprise when I set them in the quilt layout. So cool!

Block Base Fun

This was my first attempt at superimposing a block and I was delighted at the result and at how easy it was to do. Thanks for the challenge! I used my own block for this quilt, made by superimposing blocks 3509 and 2705 from Block Base. I used a layout from EQ5. Meg Leach in England.

Summer Dried Flowers

This quilt reminds me of the colours of summer dried flowers. I used my own block, made from superimposing Block Base blocks 4213 and 2705, and then set them into one of EQ5's Layout patterns. I changed the border to a piece border, picking up on the colours used in the centre. Meg Leach, England

Facets

This is my first EQ Challenge. I had fun combining a Garden Patch Block and a Five Spot Block and erasing a couple of lines to simplify piecing. Then I set it on point. The block looked like a gem to me, hence the name "Facets".

Birds in the palms

Combo of Birds in the Air and The Palm I removed 1/2 of the palm block and previewed the possibilities with the symmetry tool. Too much fun! Could have submitted many, many ideas. This was so much fun and so easy. Instant gratification. Cheryl Johnston, New Hampshire, cwjohn@attbi.com.
