Club EQ Album: November 2002 Challenge: Superimpose Blocks! Page 13

"Explore the EQ Block Library and find two blocks that can be superimposed to create an entirely new block. This can be a really fun thing to do and something you might not think to do without the computer to help you! Start by looking at blocks with similar grids. You can explore further by getting bold about what you combine.

The superimposing or overlaying of one block design over another can be done in the Edit mode from the Sketchbook. Save two blocks into the project Sketchbook. Edit one and select all the lines. Copy. Then Paste those lines over another block drawing that you have selected to Edit from the Sketchbook. Carefully center one over the other and look for design elements to highlight with color."

'Twas the Night Before Christmas

With a mess of lines. Obviously I now know at least 50 ways of not doing this Challenge. I finally used the Attic Window and Clay's Choice. I fiddled with size but having the clear space of the window made it easy. I know what I am going to be working on. It was really fun and I learned a great. I also used the Custom Set Quilt for practise. Dorothy Atkinson - Lafontaine, Ontario, Canada click here to email Dorothy

I envisioned something quite different when I created the block for this quilt. I kept playing around with the colors, and loved this result where the purple 'X's' appear to float above the background. If I were going to make this quilt I would delete several lines (seams) in the block that became unnecessary with this final coloring.. I named the block Eternal Flame and it is a combination of the Arkansas Snowflake and the Box-in-a-box Variation. Pocatello Idaho click here to email Janis

Winds of Freedom

I call the block in the quilt Spinning Square. It is a combination of World Without End Variation, and Diamond in the Square. The border block is adapted from a border that John Flynn demonstrated on Simply Quilts; episode 814, and aired November 18, 2002. He sewed his fabric into strips, cut it into rails and triangles and assembled it to achieve the braided effect.. I named the block Border Braid. Pocatello, Idaho click here to email Janis

Leaded Glass 5

Double X No. 1 + Bow Tie by Dottie Richey Atlanta, Georgia dotmrichey@aol.com When I recolored the blocks, the geometric design reminded me somewhat of a stained glass window. I believe it would actually be pieceable and even by strip piecing, I think. This is my first challenge, but definitely not my last!

Star Tracks

By Dottie Richey, Atlanta, Georgia dotmrichey@aol.com Combined World's Fair Puzzle and Mosaic #1(2) blocks. I added a half square triangle block in the first (Blocks) border to create the gold star points. The outer border was created from a project in EQ5 Simplified by Fran Gonzalez. This challenge was my first and it was a lot of fun! The real challenge lay in the coloring of the blocks after setting them into the four block horizontal quilt.
