Club EQ Album: July 2002 Challenge: Red, White, and Blue!

"July is the month of patriotism for America, but the red, white, and blue color scheme can be used by anyone, anywhere. Design a quilt with these three focus colors. Use tints or shades or various fabrics if you desire. You may even challenge yourself to use these colors in a way that does _not_ say 'American flag'."

Fourth of July Pole

I colored the EQ logo block to look like a waving American flag. The symmetries tool in EQ5 offered this design when the blocks were rotated. The double points out border is also new in EQ5.

EQ5 tile blocks
I modified one corner of the Bysantine tile block to match the peacock feather block in order to have a more flowing design. I used several fabrics for each color to provide more interest.

Fireworks!

This quilt was inspired by watching the fireworks displays on July 1st (Canada Day) and July 4th (U.S.A. Independence Day). I found the main blocks using the search feature with the words "Fireworks" & "Chrysanthemum". I then adapted the stars from the "Fireworks" block for one of the border blocks and for the centre of the sashing blocks. The larger border block is 1/4 of the "Chrysanthemum" block. For my fabrics I chose "Celestials" by Hoffman to represent the dark blue of the night sky, "Essentials" by Hoffman for the sparks of red in the fireworks, and "Texture" by Jennifer Sampou for the fireworks light against the night sky.

I started out with a small Mariner's compass and it kept growing and changing, it looks nothing like what I started with. I really enjoyed completing this challenge.
