Club EQ Album: June 2002 Challenge: Before and After!

"Design a quilt and color it as a two-color quilt with solid colors. Save. Then augment the quilt design with designer fabrics and/or more colors and show us the difference! You will be submitting before and after of one quilt only, please. Keep the file cleared of unused fabrics and blocks to minimize its size."

Sunrise in Florence Prototype

Take a monochromatic quilt coloring and jazz it up. This prototype has solid reds.

Sunrise in Florence

The swag motif reminds me of traditional Florentine designs. I used accents of green, which is the complementary color for red. The use of realistic fabrics gives this quilt coloring a lot of depth.

My feathery Star 2

The design is "jazzed up" and I used lots of colors to make this quilt more exciting. The design is my own.

Spring Irises - After!

This quilt evolved in another challenge which was to use two blocks in a number of quilt settings. When I used this colour combination and this setting, I could see "Irises" popping out among the stars. It was fun to see how fabrics made a difference in this design. Try reversing the colours and you get a whole different look.

Spring Irises - Before!

I chose Clouds by Possibilities for the purple pieces and Atlantis by Rose & Hubble for the light green pieces. I think they give it a softer, spring-like look. When you remove the block and patch outlines you have an even better view of how these two fabric choices look in this quilt.

Circles of the East

This was indeed a challenge - I hope I haven't "cheated" by a bit of block manipulation.

Rule Days!

Isn't it amazing what colours will do to the same block. I was trying to achieve the transparent effect that Barb Vlack teaches in EQMagic on Page 72. I didn't get it, and wonder if it can only be used on certain shapes. It was fun trying and seeing how many looks can be achieved with one block.

Schooldays

Click here to visit a really interesting site. I started trying to remember a little about geometry because this is what we use in quilting. I decided to do a search on the net and was delighted to find this one. It's been fifty years since my high school graduation but it is amazing how much we do remember. It is so interesting using the geometrical diagrams that are there. I still hear my dad saying " you never know when you will use geometry."

Star Quilt - Before

This is the before quilt, just two colors and would make a pretty quilt in just these two colors. But let's see what we can to do jazz things up a bit. I see some circular shapes hiding in the piecework. Let's try to draw them out.

Hidden Circles - After

Well, I found the circles. Hope you see them too. Looks quite different, yes? I need to use my batik fabrics more, they are wonderful.
