Club EQ Album: March 2002 Challenge: 30s Blocks and Fabrics!

"Use blocks and fabrics or colors from the 30s to design a quilt. There are 30s prints among the many fabrics in various versions of Stash. If you don’t have access to Stash, you might find some fabrics in EQ 4.1 that are similar. Or feel free to use solid colors. Do some research through BlockBase or other book and magazine resources to find blocks original to the 30s era. Have a great time designing a traditional quilt or one that goes beyond our wildest expectations!"

Ring Around the Posies

The coloring is inspired by a vintage 30s quilt with the triple Irish Chain block. The Posies could be traditional 30s yo-yos.

Not My Grandmother's Flower Garden

I don't remember my grandmother as a gardener, but I do love the flowers made from 30s fabrics and vintage blocks! The scalloped border is made in EQ 4.1 with applique motif blocks, which don't have block outlines.

A Sampler for the 30s

This is my workshop sampler for teaching blocks "born" in the 30s. The center block is Prairie Queen, and it's the logo for the Prairie Star Quilters Guild that I belong to.

Sunbonnet Sue
and Co. 1930's

Best viewed with patch and block outlines unchecked (rt click on quilt and uncheck). In a real quilt the border would be prairie points and the applique outlined with blanket sitich. I plan to sew this quilt on my 1925 Singer electrified machine. Jane Turgeon

Patience

Bridge Quilt - KC Star 1933
I found this block in Blockbase (308). The fabrics are Bernatex from Stash. I have called this Patience as I played around designing 2 quilts for the March challenge it took me 3 hours and then I tidied up the fabrics and I got an error reading notecard and had to do the whole thing again!!!!!!

Kentucky Flying Geese

Block No 2802
I found this block in Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Patterns- Kentucky Cross Roads.. It's a design from 1930 and I have used Bernatex fabrics from Stash. This is the first quilt I have tried using the quilting stencil.

30's Fan

I love working with the fabrics from the 30's. Found this setting for the fan in an Art Deco Book. One day I hope to put this to fabric.

With the coming of June and weddings, this just seemed like something someone would make for a wedding quilt back in the 30's

Pineapple Log Cabin

This is a rendition of a quilt on p.136 in Mississippi Quilts. Called "String Quilt" by the family, it was made circa 1930 by Lucinda Felder Reeves outside McComb MS. Instead of the usual "Courthouse Steps" type of Pineapple, it is made in the Spiral Log Cabin qtyle. Quite a challenge to draft. The quilt itself is in excellent condition. It will be in the MQA exhibit at the Civic Center during the 2002 AQS show in Paducah

Think Spring!
Picnic Placemat

I decided to design a project with a slightly different twist for this month's challenge by. designing a placemat into which I incorporated one of the many Dresden Plate blocks found in EQ4. The fabrics came from the EQ3 40s Sherbet Prints. Once again I discovered that with EQ and a dash of creative inspiration the possibilities are endless.

I'm Ready For Spring!

Late winter on the Canadian Prairies inspired the title of this quilt--I'm ready for spring! A lot of the quilts that I saw from the 30s had white, beige or pale yellow backgrounds with pastel colours for the main applique or block pieces. Dresden Plate was one pattern which was popular. I think the pastel colours of Benartex's One-A-Day Prints make the Dresden Plate block look like spring flowers.

CottageTulips Quilt

I copy and pasted the tulip block into patchdraw to get the quilting stencil that I wanted for this quilt. No block outline on it now. Designing is so easy with EQ.

Grandma's Memories

The blocks that I think of when you talk about 30's quilts are Grandmother's Flower Garden, Grandmother's Fan and Double Wedding Ring so it was fun to incorporated these three into and unusual setting.

Blocks were from EQ4 libraries. For the Sunbonnet blocks the original blocks were used, deleting objects and then redrawing other things such as a star, umbrella, book, etc. A great exercise in drawing patches. My first attempt at a challenge.

The block caught my attention in Nancy Martin's calendar. I made the quilt in bright 30's repros with white-on-white, it just needs to be quilted and will be a baby present.
